Until 1820, Gunning was at the "Limit of Settlement". European settlement started in 1821 with the exploration by a party led by Hamilton Hume. In 1824 Hume with William Hovell pioneered the route from Gunning south to what later became Melbourne. This route was the precursor to the Hume Highway and ran right through the main street of Gunning until 1993. Now a mere two minute detour from the Hume Highway takes you to the relaxed heart of Gunning. The railway arrived in 1875 and is still the main rail link between Sydney and Melbourne. Gunning is famous these days for fine wool and a huge fireworks festival.
