If you're only considering visiting Lady Musgrave Island, then you're halfway to visiting one of the most beautiful areas on the GBR. Located 70km off the coast, LMI is quite small, taking roughly 30-45 minutes to walk around, dependent on if you're stopping to read about the wildlife, listen to the birds, or clean poop off yourself (which I believe in one of the very few downsides to LMI). There are no predators, sandflies, mosquitoes or anything overly dangerous located on the island, making it an ideal habitat for the wildlife and for campers. Beware of centipedes, campers. If you're camping or only visiting for the day, there are two tour groups available, one that visits from the town of 1770 and the Lady Musgrave Experience group from the town of Bundaberg (yes, the very same location where Bundaberg Rum is made, bottled and shipped). [Off-topic: Word of mouth from those camping on the island tells me that the 1770 group are not very professional, having stranded some campers for five days without water. When they did return on the sixth day, they had not brought any water for the campers]. Which brings me to the second downside of visiting LMI: sea sickness; and by god, if you don't have travelcalm, expect to be sick. The boat ride with the LMExperience group took roughly 2 hours, with around 75% of those travelling (including myself) being sick. You have been warned. Lady Musgrave Island is also a turtle breeding zone, so if you're camping in the summer months, 1 hour prior and in the 2 hours following high tide in the evening, dozens of turtles will make their way up the beach to lay their eggs, which makes for an incredible sight. Lastly, for those hoping to camp on LMI, please be aware that the island is closed between January 26 & Easter, to allow for the baby turtles to hatch unimpeded by humans, who may try to help all baby turtles survive. It is unfortunate that the baby turtles must be left to live or die, but it is apart of the natural order of life. If you're only considering visiting Lady Musgrave Island, rip that bandaid off and get yourself over there. You will not regret it.
